Abdominal Surgery - Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty or 'tummy tuck' is an operation performed to improve the shape and contour of the lower trunk. The procedure removes excess skin and fat and tightens the stomach muscles which flattens the 'belly' and narrows the waist.

The classic or full tummy tuck requires an incision (cut) from hip to hip below the underwear/ bikini line and around the belly button. Candidates for this operation usually have more sag and weakness of the abdominal wall and this is the preferred technique for maximum correction.

For those who are younger, or have good skin elasticity, the mini abdominoplasty is preferred. This requires more extensive use of liposuction for contouring and shaping the waist, while a shorter scar allows for the extra skin to be removed. No scar is required around the belly button.

These procedures are done under general anaesthetic or with combinations of conscious sedation, epidural and local anaesthesia. An overnight stay is recommended and drains are commonly used. Surgical compression garments are advised for 2 to 4 weeks.

Risks and complications include fluid collections, infection, delayed healing and scar irregularities. Rare but serious risks include blood clots and pulmonary embolus.

Patients who have the best results are non smokers who are at (or near) their ideal weight for their height and exercise regularly.
