Liposuction and Contouring - Fat transfer/ Fat grafting /Lipo transfer/

Fat cells and Adipose Derived Stem Cells are simply harvested from areas of abundance such as lower abdomen and thighs using a technique similar to liposuction. After preparation of the fat or aspirate it is then injected into the treatment area using fine hollow cannulas.

Areas that can be filled or contoured in this way are the face, breasts and buttocks. Fat transfer may be used to correct any indented surgical or traumatic scars as well as dimples or irregularities anywhere on the body.

Activation of the stem cells may result in improvement of the quality of skin and scars in the area of the fat graft, as well as improving blood supply in areas of radiation such as in breast reconstruction.

In both cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery it is an excellent technique to adjust asymmetry of size and shape, cover over implants where the skin may be thin and to enhance the breast shape and volume.

Local anaesthetic techniques are used in the rooms, or fat transfer can be performed with conscious sedation or general anaesthetic. It is often combined with other procedures such as face lift surgery.

Liposculpture/ Lipo contouring

LIPOSUCTION is a surgical procedure used to reduce localized fatty deposits which do not respond to diet or exercise. It is not a treatment for obesity, a method of losing weight or an alternative to a healthy lifestyle. The surgery is best performed if you are at, or close to your ideal weight for height.

Liposuction = liposculpture = suction assisted lipectomy.

In women I commonly treat hips, thighs, love handles, tummy, buttocks and knees. Liposuction is also commonly used to tighten necks and arms and in combination with other surgery such as tummy tucks and breast surgery. This day surgery is performed in the procedure room or theatre, under local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic according to the size and area of liposuction.

In men the common areas treated are the chest, tummy and neck.

I use the tumescent technique of liposuction where large volumes of local anaesthesia are given into the treatment area to decrease bleeding and bruising and to assist with pain relief during and after surgery. Incisions are small (5 mm,) and are camouflaged in natural body lines to leave fine, inconspicuous scars.

Post-operative recovery is quick, but bruising and swelling can remain for 2-4 weeks. It is advisable to wear firm post surgical garments immediately after the surgery and for 2 to 4 weeks thereafter. Liposuction is a relatively safe procedure with a low complication rate. A normal lifestyle can be resumed a week or two after surgery.

It is important for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle, a sensible eating plan, perform moderate exercise and control your weight, so that you will be satisfied with the long term results.

Note: There are a variety of assisted forms of liposuction such as ultrasound-, laser-, hydro-, and power assisted liposuction. Be careful to understand the differences and check these with your doctor. [Vaser and Slimlipo are examples].
